So much good stuff! Golden craft nuggets aside, I love getting to hear agents talk about their work and what they love and how they think about story. I feel like I get to know them way more than from their MSWL or their query tips!
Agreed! It’s easy to get really pessimistic about this industry and even the people who work in it. Especially when they’re passing on our hard work. But hearing how much Mike loooves craft and loves their job is the best sort of peek behind the curtain.
This episode was so useful! The Fire Island example was so illuminating, I don't think I've ever quite understood the way it is for lit agents until that moment. Can't wait to think of all the ways this can apply to writing.
It was SUCH a flashbulb moment for Anne and me, too. As you heard, it actually took us a few minutes to detangle why we were into the "generic" pitch when Mike was using it as an example of what not to do. Truly the first time I understood the impact of being one drop in the query ocean, and specifically (muhaha) WHY its hard to stand out.
